The Town Hall of Chalkis

The prefecture of Evia covers a total area of 3.896 square kilometres and has a population of 269.132, according to the census of 1991. It is divided into three provinces (sub prefectures) the province of Chalkida, Istiaias and Karistos.

The island of Skyros belongs to the island group of sporades and is situated to the East of central Evia. Administratively it belongs to Evia and is connected to Kimi by ferry boat. Skyros is bordered by the Agean Pelagos.

The destiny of Evia is closely associated with the destiny of the channel of Evripos. During the exchange of the tidal phenomena, the ebbing and flowing of the ride, the visitor can feel the exchange of agitation and tranquillity in the human soul.

There is a strong element of contrast in Evia, not only because of the tide but also because of the island's unusual shape. It is an island but it is also considered to be an extension of the mainland as it is connected to it by two bridges. The one bridge is a swing bridge which stands across the channel of Evripos and gives the visitor the opportunity to admire, not only the bridge which is a creation of technology, but also the tide, which is a creation of nature. The other bridge, is a high suspension bridge standing over the channel bridge standing over the channel of Avlida in the Southern Gulf of Evia which constitutes a remarkable achievement of modern technology.
